Launched: Dec. 25, 2021. First images revealed: July 12, 2022. Follow along as the world’s most powerful space telescope.

Now the world got its first look at the full capabilities of the world’s most powerful space telescope.

You’re looking at the deepest infrared image of the universe 13 Billion Light Years ever taken—the first full-color image from @NASAWebb

The mission goals of the James Webb Space Telescope are:

  • Search for the first galaxies or luminous objects formed after the Big Bang
  • Determine how galaxies evolved from their formation until now
  • Observe the formation of stars from the first stages to the formation of planetary systems
  • Measure the physical and chemical properties of planetary systems, including our own Solar System, and investigate the potential for life in those systems

The instruments being carried by the JWST observatory are:

  • Near Infrared Camera (NIRCam)
  • Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec)
  • Mid Infrared Instrument (MIRI)
  • Fine Guidance Sensors/Near Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph (FGS/NIRISS)
